Meet Jean-Michel: Ambassador, 3-Time Marathoner, Supporter

February 28, 2020

From people who have run dozens of marathons to those conquering the distance for the first time, every runner has a story. The 2020 Los Angeles Marathon race field is made up of 25,000 people. That's 25,000 different stories, relationships to running, and reasons for stepping onto the course. It's time we hear about them.

Jean-Michel was born and raised in Paris, France. After living 8 years in Brooklyn, New York he moved to Koreatown in Los Angeles, CA. He found his second family - Koreatown Running Club and they helped him run his very first Los Angeles Marathon in 2019. Since then, he has loved the endless support from the running community. Jean-Michel is now running for mental health/suicide awareness and diversity.

Besides running, what do you like to do for fun?

I like Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and any extreme sports.

Who do you look up to?

I look up to my mother and nephew.

How is your training going?

The 2020 Los Angeles Marathon is a week away, so still adjusting, but going good so far.

How many marathons have you previously run?

3 full marathons: Los Angeles, Chicago, and Honolulu. The 2019 Los Angeles Marathon was my first marathon ever.

How do you motivate yourself to keep going when things are hard?

Turn the mamba mentality on! Family, my nephew, and to everyone who believes in me helps keep me pushing the extra miles.

What inspired you to start running?

My running family: Koreatown Running Club (KRC) and my running community.

Has your reason for running changed over the years and if so what is it now?

Over the last year and half of running, my reason of running changed dramatically! After the lost of my nephew, I’ve been running for mental health/suicide awareness and diversity. After doing RAH (Running Across Haiti, 200 miles in 8 days), I realized I can touch people in all other levels and help worldwide.

What's your game plan for the race?

It’s not a sprint but a marathon, so I'm trying to be the best version of myself and have fun with it.

What is it that you love most about our course?

The Los Angeles running community cheer squads! To see all families on this route is priceless.

What training tips do you have for runners?

It’s not a sprint, but a marathon! Run at your own pace.

What is a quote you like to live by?

"ONE RUN WE ALL RUN!" Keep Shining!

What does living an active lifestyle mean to you?

Enjoying life with the people I love.
